Patient Simulator That Builds Real Communication Skills

A patient simulator built for reps, not lectures

Communication is a skill, and skills are built through repetition. One workshop or one lecture does not change what someone says under pressure. Reps do. Like working out, short regular practice beats a single heroic effort, and Empathable PX is built to make those reps cheap, private, and easy to repeat.

Private practice, so people stop performing

In front of an audience, most learners act. They perform for the grade, the observer, or the room. Alone with a virtual patient, there is no audience to impress. That privacy is the point: people bring their real selves, try the sentence that scares them, hear how it lands, and try again.

What practice sounds like: “I finally said the hard thing out loud, and nobody was grading me.”

Feedback on your actual words, not a general impression

After each conversation, the virtual patient tells a coach how it felt from the patient’s side of the bed. The learner gets a narrative summary and a breakdown across the six HCAHPS patient communication skills, scored on 32 criteria and tied to specific lines they said. Vague feedback helps no one. Feedback tied to your words changes the next conversation.

What we're not doing: replacing people with robots

Virtual patients are openly not human, and that’s fine. People adapt quickly, and this space is for practice, not for pretending. Standardized patients and simulation centers do something valuable that we don’t replace. We add the reps between those sessions, so the expensive, hard-to-schedule hours count for more.

Five minutes, on any device

Sessions take about five minutes and run on any device. That is short enough to fit between rounds, classes, or shifts, and regular enough to build real proficiency: a good score, then a good score at increasing difficulty, then holding it over time.

FAQ

A patient simulator lets learners practice conversations with a virtual patient instead of waiting for a real or standardized-patient encounter. Empathable PX focuses on communication: what you say, how it lands, and how to do it better next time.

About five minutes, on any device. Short sessions are deliberate: they make daily reps realistic.

No. They complement them. Standardized-patient sessions stay valuable; virtual patients add cheap, private reps between them so learners arrive more prepared.

At-cost or free pilots are available for hospitals and schools under a research grant, with setup within a week.

Your team doesn't need another lecture on communication. It needs reps.
